Civic Leadership Award: CFSA is honoring Marla Franco, assistant vice provost for Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives at the College of Arizona, as the receiver of the Civic Leadership Award. The award honors members of the community who have long gone over and beyond to make Southern Arizona a far more inclusive and welcoming area to live. These nominees must inspire other folks as a result of possibly their work, volunteerism or advocacy attempts with varied or underrepresented communities. Franco led initiatives toward the UA getting to be federally regarded as an HSI in 2018. She is the current founder of the AZ HSI Consortium, aimed at fostering partnerships and leveraging methods throughout all 16 HSIs in Arizona, and cofounder of the STEM in HSI Functioning Team, aimed at bringing larger fairness in STEM at HSIs. Throughout the pandemic, Franco guide distribution efforts of $2.3 million in CARES Act Funding, prioritizing aid for the campus meals pantry, escalating laptop computer and hotspot lending stock, reinvesting in on-campus scholar work, and supporting technologies accessibility and college outreach to Indigenous Nations.
