US attorney general says money from Russian oligarchs’ seized assets should go ‘directly to Ukraine’

US Lawyer Basic Merrick Garland instructed Congress on Tuesday that he’s in favor of some of the proceeds from Russian oligarch seizures heading straight to Ukraine.

Garland had been detailing to the Senate Appropriations Committee how the US Justice Section offers with proceeds from Russian belongings that have been recovered.

“The cash would go into the asset forfeiture fund. So, 1st thing we have to do is freeze the belongings,” Garland told the committee. “We would help laws that would allow for some of that funds to go directly to Ukraine.”

The Justice Department’s new endeavor force, called “Operation KleptoCapture,” was established up in early March to enable detain the personal jets, superyachts, and genuine estate of sanctioned Russian oligarchs.

Garland also instructed the committee that he predicted there would be requests for legislative changes to make it less difficult to seize sanctioned Russians’ assets and using cash out of the asset forfeiture fund to send to Ukraine.

“I hope really shortly, inside times possibly, that the administration will be able to present some request,” Garland explained.

In early April, the US seized its very first superyacht that had ties to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg in Spain. The vessel is valued at $90 million, according to the US Section of Justice (DOJ).

Garland’s comments follow President Joe Biden’s announcement on Thursday that the US would send out $800 million well worth of aid to Ukraine.
